LOS ANGELES — More than 200 students and staff at two Los Angeles universities have been placed under quarantine because they may have been exposed to measles and either have not been vaccinated or cannot verify that they are immune, officials said Thursday. The order issued late Wednesday in connection with the University of California, Los Angeles, and California State University, Los Angeles, requires that affected people stay home, avoid contact with others and notify authorities if they develop measles symptoms. Oklahoma governor combines Columbus, Native American days

Apr 26, 2019

OKLAHOMA CITY — A bill that a broad coalition of Native American groups endorsed to celebrate a day for indigenous people on Columbus Day was signed into law Thursday by Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, the first governor in the U.S. to be enrolled as a member of a Native American tribe. The Republican said the bill was a fair compromise that gives Oklahoma residents an opportunity to celebrate both the 15th century explorer Christopher Columbus and the state's indigenous people. The Inter-Tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, which represents more than 750,000 tribal citizens, passed a resolution earlier this...

Gregory was rescued from his perch atop the giant white fir by volunteer firefighter Randy Acker, who owns a tree removal company. "My thought was, 'I...

Amazon's profit more than doubles on cloud computing growth

Apr 26, 2019

NEW YORK — Amazon's push into advertising and cloud computing is paying off, helping the online shopping giant's first quarter profit more than double from a year ago. The company also announced that it would be shaking up its Prime membership by offering one-day delivery on most goods instead of two-day. Brian Olsavsky, Amazon's chief financial officer, said the shift means costs will rise as it hires more workers and builds more warehouses to pack and ship orders. Amazon did not say when it plans to offer Prime one-day shipping. Overall, Amazon reported net income of $3.56 billion, or $7.09...
