Both sides ignoring swing voters in hot Texas Senate race

Oct 23, 2018

AUSTIN, Texas — With Mike Pence and Donald Trump Jr. already visiting the state and the president himself working thousands of supporters into a frenzy at a Houston rally Monday night, Ted Cruz is convening a veritable parade of Republican powerbrokers in the final weeks of the Texas Senate campaign to ensure Democrat Beto O'Rourke doesn't upset him. O'Rourke is countering with the opposite. He's blowing off the Democratic Party's political luminaries and instead cranking up the cool — rocking with Willie Nelson, securing shout-outs from star rappers and road-tripping with a 38-year-old Kennedy whose family name still has its...

Bible Museum admits some of its Dead Sea Scrolls are fake

Oct 23, 2018

WASHINGTON — When Washington's $500 million Museum of the Bible held its grand opening in November 2017, attended by Vice President Mike Pence, there were questions even then about the authenticity of its centerpiece collection of Dead Sea Scrolls. Now the museum has been forced to admit a painful truth: Technical analysis by a team of German scholars has revealed that at least five of the museum's 16 scroll fragments are apparent forgeries. The announcement has serious implications not only for the Bible Museum but for other evangelical Christian individuals and institutions who paid top dollar for what now seems...

The series profiled the contenders and let bookworms, famous and not, advocate for their pick. More than 4 million votes were cast over six months, PBS said, with Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" series and Rowling's...

Lioness at Indianapolis Zoo kills her longtime mate

Oct 23, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Zoo is trying to determine why a lioness killed her mate. The zoo said Friday that an adult female, Zuri, attacked 10-year-old male Nyack in their outdoor yard Monday before the zoo opened for the day. The zoo says the two had been housed together for eight years and produced three cubs in 2015. Nyack was on loan from the San Diego Zoo. It says that staff heard an unusual amount of roaring from the yard and tried to separate the two but that Zuri held Nyack by the neck until he stopped moving. A necropsy...

Medtronic co-founder who created wearable pacemaker dies

Oct 23, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS — Earl Bakken, an electronics repairman who created the first wearable external pacemaker and co-founded one of the world's largest medical device companies, Medtronic, has died. He was 94. Bakken, who also commercialized the first implantable pacemaker in 1960, died Sunday at his home in Hawaii, Medtronic said in a statement. It didn't give a cause of death. Bakken and his brother-in-law, Palmer Hermundslie, formed Medtronic in 1949 and turned it from a struggling company they ran out of the Hermundlie family's Minneapolis garage into a multinational medical technology powerhouse.
