Boeing to take a $4.9 billion charge over grounded jet

Jul 19, 2019

DALLAS — Boeing said Thursday it is booking a $4.9 billion charge to cover possible compensation to airlines that have canceled thousands of flights since the 737 Max jet was grounded after two deadly accidents. The airplane builder also said the Max-related fallout will cut $5.6 billion from its revenue and pre-tax earnings in the April-through-June quarter. The Chicago-based company said the calculations were based on an assumption that regulatory approval for the plane's return to flying will begin early in the fourth quarter. That timing is earlier than some analysts expected and may have contributed to a rally in...

A community ponders role of drugmakers in opioid struggle

Jul 19, 2019

JACKSON, Ohio — The numbers are staggering: An average yearly total of 107 opioid pills per resident were distributed over a seven-year period in this rural Appalachian county. The newly released federal data is shocking even to people who live here in Jackson County, where nearly everyone seems to have known someone who died from drug-related causes. Five children in one elementary school class were said to have lost a parent to an overdose death this past academic year. Standing at his son's grave in Coalton, a village of fewer than 500 people, Eddie Davis remembers vividly his last conversation,...

Jerry Seinfeld learns from comedy's best on Netflix series

Jul 19, 2019

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Jerry Seinfeld says he'd rather ride classic cars and sip coffee with comedy's best than reboot his uber-successful "Seinfeld" television series. Seinfeld said in an interview Wednesday night that bringing back his eponymous sitcom that recently celebrated its 30-year anniversary would be "egomaniacal." The comedian says he is focused on learning more about the "sharpest minds in comedy" through his Netflix series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." The 11th season premieres Friday on the streaming service featuring Eddie Murphy. The season also includes other comedians including Jamie Foxx, Martin Short, Rick Gervais, Bridget Everett and more....

Georgia beachgoers help pilot whales from stranding on shore

Jul 19, 2019

SAVANNAH, Ga. — A summer afternoon at the beach quickly became a scramble to save a pod of disoriented pilot whales, as vacationers on a popular Georgia island joined lifeguards and state wildlife crews in the water to stop dozens of the large marine mammals from beaching themselves. Officials were hopeful they had saved most of the short-fin pilot whales that swam perilously close to shore Tuesday on St. Simons Island, about 70 miles (112 kilometers) south of Savannah. Harbor pilots spotted a large group of whales in the nearby shipping channel early Wednesday, and by mid-afternoon they were swimming...

Number of US overdose deaths appears to be falling

Jul 19, 2019

NEW YORK — U.S. overdose deaths last year likely fell for the first time in nearly three decades, preliminary statistics suggest. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday posted the provisional numbers showing nearly 68,000 drug overdose deaths were reported last year. The number may go up as more investigations are completed, but the agency expects the tally will end up below 69,000. Overdose deaths had been climbing each year since 1990, topping 70,000 in 2017. The numbers were celebrated by the U.S. secretary of health and human services. "Lives are being saved, and we're beginning to win...
