The Latest: Last place for Florence's floods gets ready

Sep 20, 2018

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Latest on Florence (all times local): 5:20 p.m. Officials in the place where much of the floodwaters from Hurricane Florence will reach the Atlantic Ocean are preparing for a flood like they have never seen before. Georgetown County Administrator Sel Hemingway said Thursday it is too early to know exactly how high the water will get or how much land will be flooded starting next week. Water from five different rivers flow through the county to the ocean. Hemingway says in the worst-case scenario, more than 10 percent of the county's 61,000 residents might have to...

Florence-weary South Carolina could get more record flooding

Sep 20, 2018

WILMINGTON, N.C. — As rivers swollen to record levels started to recede Thursday in North Carolina, officials tried to head off potential environmental disasters and prepared for more record flooding downstream in South Carolina. Roads were still clogged with people trying to make it back to where the floods had creeped back, leaving silty mud on walls and floors. Crews closed some bridges and reopened others as trillions of gallons of water continued its long, meandering journey to the Atlantic Ocean. Potential environmental problems remained. Duke Energy issued a high-level emergency alert after floodwaters from the Cape Fear River overtopped...

Regulators warned that people...

Get ready for 'Bongzilla,' selfie frenzy at Vegas pot museum

Sep 20, 2018

LAS VEGAS — A glass bong taller than a giraffe. Huggable faux marijuana buds. A pool full of foam weed nuggets. Las Vegas' newest attraction — and Instagram backdrop — is a museum celebrating all things cannabis. Nobody will be allowed to light up at Cannabition when it opens Thursday because of a Nevada ban on public consumption of marijuana, but visitors can learn about the drug as they snap photos. It's a made-for-social-media museum where every exhibit has lights meant to ensure people take selfies worthy of the no-filter hashtag. The facility — whose founder says has a goal...

Sep 20, 2018

NEW YORK — It's almost moving day on the stock market. The line-ups of three of the 11 groups that make up the benchmark S&P 500 index are being shuffled as of Monday. Twenty companies in the index including famous names like Facebook, Alphabet and Netflix will find a new home.
