Mar 21, 2018

NEW YORK — For nearly 80 years, the trail was stone cold for a missing 16th-century Renaissance portrait, looted by the Nazis from an estate in the Netherlands. But late last year, Christie's auction house was contacted about its potential whereabouts, and the prized painting was returned to the Los Angeles heir of its owners. It will go on sale next month in New York. The painting, a portrait by the German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder, had belonged to Fritz Gutmann, who owned a large collection on his estate in the Netherlands. An amendment added Tuesday allows furriers and other retailers to sell current inventory until January 1, 2020. Wayne Hsiung, co-founder of animal rights...

JUNEAU, Alaska — The recent discovery of the USS Juneau in the depths of the South Pacific has provided some closure to people with connections to the ship, which was blown apart during World War II. Hundreds died, including the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa, whose story was chronicled in a 1944 movie. An expedition backed by Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen reported finding the wreckage over the weekend. David Reams, senior director of maritime operations for Allen, said the team's primary aim was to find the USS Lexington, which it reported finding earlier this month more than...
